If you’re considering installing solar panels in San Diego, you are understandably concerned about the potential of hail damaging your solar panels. In the San Diego area, we are no strangers to hail or severe weather, so naturally you want to make sure that your investment can stand up to Mother Nature.
The good news is that solar panels are heavily tested and are capable to standing up to most hail. Unusually large hail storms can indeed damage solar panels, but solar panels are designed and engineered to generally withstand hail the size of golf balls or smaller.
Solar panels are made with very durable tempered glass that is impact tested to withstand strikes of greater than 50 miles per hour. It is also important to note that most solar panels are installed at an angle—meaning the panels will receive a glancing blow rather than a direct impact.
Hail is a relatively common occurrence here in Southern California, but, fortunately, most of our hail is small, unlike the Midwest where softball sized hail can occur nearly every year in some areas. Hail in our area tends to be much smaller—generally pea sized or smaller.
What if my Solar Panels Are Damaged by Hail?
In the even that your solar panels are damaged by hail, the equipment should be covered by your homeowner’s insurance policy. After you have solar panels installed, be sure to contact your insurance agency immediately to have your solar panels added to your home’s policy. Some homeowners will avoid adding their solar panels to their home insurance policies because they are afraid of policy rate increases, but we urge you not to do this. The increase in your home insurance premiums is generally less than $10 per month—well worth it when it protects an investment worth tens of thousands of dollars.
Your solar panels’ warranty will not cover “acts of God” so if you receive damage to your system from a hail storm and you do not have your panels covered by an insurance policy, you will have to pay out of pocket for the panels to be repaired or replaced.
