Buyer’s Guide for Furnaces: Why You Want the Best Heating Installers in San Diego

Buying a furnace, a heat pump or an HVAC system in general, requires due diligence on your part to ensure you make a good investment in your home comfort. You need to decide what kind of equipment you will get (e.g. electric furnace or a gas one, or a heat pump, etc.) and what brand (Lennox, Carrier, Trane, Mitsubishi, etc.). However, it is just as important that you find the best furnace installers you can find in your area. Why? With more than 40 years of experience, Action AC is the top trusted local HVAC contractor when it comes to heating installation and heating repair in Escondido and across San Diego. We’ll tell you why installation matters and what possible problems are.

Comfort, safety and long equipment life

Well installed systems live longer and need fewer repairs throughout their life. Furnace installation (or HVAC installation) is a complex procedure because it doesn’t accept cookie-cutter solutions. Your heating system needs to be installed according to manufacturer’s specifications and according to your specific needs.

Proper installation is not just about avoiding hot and cold spots, humidity issues, noisy operation, etc. It’s also about avoiding the likelihood of carbon monoxide leaks, which can happen with gas furnaces.

Get a properly sized system

Your heating system should be sized according to certain parameters. Your HVAC installer should be someone you can rely on to perform calculations to determine the size and capacity you need for your new furnace or HVAC system.

You may think that getting a system or furnace with the same capacity as your current system is enough. However, that may not be true. Your current system may have been incorrectly sized. If you’ve done any remodeling that affected the structure of the space (especially room additions), your system may need improvements. Finally, newer units are more energy-efficient, so a smaller system may fit your needs now.

It’s important to note that it’s not energy-efficient (nor comfort-enhancing) to get the biggest possible system. One of the problems with systems that exceed your needs is they short-cycle, which leads to temperature variance and ramped-up electricity bills.

Have good air distribution

The ductwork of the system is an important part of your HVAC system. Faulty ductwork can put strain on the system, which reduces system’s life. It can also reduce your energy efficiency, wasting your utility money and hindering your comfort.

The size of the ductwork needs to match system output. With ducts that are too narrow, air velocity is increased. This can lead to draft in your home and also result in noisy operation. If the ducts are too wide, air flow may be poor, forcing the system to work harder than actually necessary.

Ducts should also be well sealed and made with good-quality materials. Leaky ducts will waste the conditioned air, make hissing sounds and lead to excess dust, draft and possibly humidity issues.

Ensure proper drainage

Waste water that’s a by-product of your heating/HVAC system’s operation has to be properly drained away. Drain water that pools and accumulates is a safety hazard because of the electrical components of the system. Potential problems don’t stop there, though. There could also be impaired air quality and mold problems. This is quite dangerous in homes where there are sensitive occupants, such as small children, seniors or individuals with respiratory conditions.

Ensure correct exhaust

Carbon monoxide is a by-product of the combustion process that takes place in your gas furnace. It is colorless and odorless and highly toxic. It must be properly and safely vented outside of the building. When furnace flue and damper are improperly sized, carbon monoxide can accumulate.

Solar Solutions: Solar Panels Help Fight Impact of Methane Leaks

The impact methane leaks have on the atmosphere is catastrophic – and the US just experienced the worst leak in its history. The natural gas leak that occurred in Aliso Canyon, Los Angeles caused damage to the climate that was even worse than the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico in 2010. On October 23, 2015, the leak was discovered from one of the 115 wells connected to SoCal Gas Company’s massive underground natural gas storage system. The gas storage system is the largest in the Western US, and the leak persisted after the first 7 attempts to seal it. The leak was permanently sealed on February 18th, 2016.

Methane is one of the strongest pollutants and has 84 times the global warming power of carbon dioxide.

  • The leak has released 150 million pounds (72,000 metric tons) of methane into the environment, according to the Environmental Defense Fund.
  • Enough methane poured into the air every day to fill a balloon the size of the Rose Bowl.
  • The leak led to more than 11,000 nearby residents being evacuated.
  • The environmental impact is equivalent to the annual greenhouse gas emissions from over half a million passenger cars.
  • Two Los Angeles Unified School District schools have closed in response to the methane leak.
  • 8,156,400 metric tons of carbon dioxide released
  • 917,790,000 gallons of gasoline burned
  • $19,193,700 dollars worth of natural gas wasted

Solar power does not expel toxins into our environment and combats the greenhouse gas buildup. Not only can solar save the environment from global warming, it is the reliable and endless resource that has fueled the existence of life since the beginning of time. In a single day the amount of sunlight that hits the United States is more than 2,500 times the entire country’s daily energy usage. Yet, solar photovoltaic panels produce less than two percent of the national electricity.

Using clean renewable energy to power our homes, businesses, and cars would eradicate the demand for methane. Becoming apart of the solar movement, using clean energy, and pushing legislation to cut methane uses are some of the immediate solutions to prevent methane environmental disasters and reduce the rate of climate change.

Become a part of the solar movement and start saving the environment and your energy costs today!

Energy Efficient Technology Helps Environment and Owners

The news about environmental pollutants, disasters and the greenhouse effect is increasing in frequency, but so is the rate of innovation with energy efficient technology. The use of clean and efficient energy systems can provide a solution to the impactful issue of environmental pollutants, and save home and business owners on energy costs. At the top of energy efficient technology is solar PV panels. Switching to solar energy power as an alternative energy solution for our every day needs can dramatically offset the negatives effects of fossil fuels, create independence from utility companies, and lower energy costs.

In addition to solar power, there are several more clean energy technologies that are helping the environment and saving home and business owners on energy costs:

Ultra Efficient Heat Pump Systems

The next generation of heat pump systems can reduce energy consumption as much as 30 – 45%. There will be several options for owners to chose from including fuel-fired multi-function residential heat pump, low-cost gas heat pump, natural gas heat pump and air conditioner.

Smart Thermostats

High tech thermostats automatically adjust room temperatures based on the individual’s lifestyle. The owner simply enables the thermostat’s settings to accommodate their comfort level and schedule, and high-tech sensors and algorithms will automatically adjust temperatures per those settings. Smart thermostats can also integrate weather fluctuations to insure your space is kept at pre set temperatures. This saves owners on energy costs, and allows for hands-free heating and cooling operation.

Carbon Fighting Heat Dryers

The same technological advances for next generation heat pump systems are being to create energy efficient heat dryers that will reduce energy consumption up to 60%. The dryer is fueled by a heat pump cycle that generates hot air to dry your clothes.

Next Generation Insulation

Keep your home insulted to it’s maximum capacity can save residential owners big on energy costs. New environmentally friendly foam has been developed that is made from composited materials and insures heat or cool air will no escape during peak seasons.

Your Complete Buyer’s Guide to a New AC System

Buying New AC System in San Diego Buying a new Air Conditioner is an investment for your home or commercial building – and one of the costliest. When shopping for a new Air Conditioner the purchaser should make sure to balance their priorities with price. AC installation can be a large investment, let us help you do it right.

To get the results you want from your new AC investment, you should put time and energy into scheduling an evaluation, researching available financing options (including HERO) and rebates, and comparing features, prices, and products. This guide from the experts at Action AC aims to help you through this process to get you on your way to lower energy bills, increased indoor comfort, and improved air quality!

Step 1: Have your home or building evaluated by a trusted NATE Certified HVAC contractor, like Action AC. The size of the living or working space, micro climate, and existing duct work determine what type of Air Conditioner is best for your needs. The HVAC contractor should use a duct-sizing method to determine if all the duct sections in the space are properly sized for efficient cooling.

If your home is not properly evaluated, an oversized AC unit could be installed. Oversized units are more expensive upfront, cycle on and off more frequently which will increase your energy bills, and make it difficult to maintain a comfortable temperature in your home.

The Air Conditioner Contractors of America (ACCA) website provides a guide in Manual J to properly evaluate a home or building’s cooling needs. Make sure to request a copy of the computer print out of the ‘cooling load calculations’.

Step 2: Once your space has been evaluated by a trusted HVAC contractor, it’s time to explore your options for the new AC system. First, prioritize your needs. There are several factors to consider:

Step 3: Research all rebate, financing options, tax incentives, and savings opportunities. Rebates and energy incentives are available through your utility company, state and federal government. Here are a few resources to research tax credits, incentives, and rebate options:

Step 4: After you have determined what your AC priorities are, and researched what savings are available to you, it’s time to start shopping.

Make sure you look at several different models and compare prices. The lowest bid that provides all the features you require does not necessarily mean it is best AC system for you.
Energy Star is an Environmental Protection Agency that helps businesses and homeowners protect the environment and save money through superior energy efficiency. An Energy Star endorsement on an AC model can give you peace of mind with your purchase.

Keep in mind that an energy-efficient system will cost more upfront, but it will eventually pay for itself and save you money in the long term on energy bills.

Reputable AC Installation Experts in San Diego Step 5: Hire a trusted HVAC contractor to perform the installation of your new AC system. Systems that have been installed incorrectly can lead to a malfunctioning system, expensive repairs, and decreased product life.

Our team at Action AC is here to guide you through purchasing a new AC. Our NATE-certified technicians are experienced and trusted HVAC contractors, and our services are guaranteed to get you on your way to the best energy savings and comfort for your living or working space!

5 Ways to Prepare Your Home for the Southwest Heat

Summer is approaching! Here are some tips from our team at Action Air to help prepare you for the Southwest heat.

1. Get an AC Tune Up

It’s important to get your AC serviced before the southwest heat hits – an overwhelming amount of home and commercial building owners don’t realize their HVAC system needs to be repaired until it breaks down. Preventative Maintenance is the best way to prevent this from happening to you during the months when you need your AC the most. For the small cost of a tune-up, it can save you big in the long run.

Action Air FACT: 90% OF ALL FURNACE & AIR CONDITIONING BREAKDOWNS ARE DUE TO LACK OF MAINTENANCE

2. Stock Up on HVAC Air Filters

It’s important to check and replace your air filter regularly, especially during the months when your AC in constantly running. A clean air filter is essential healthy indoor air quality. Timely replacement of your air filter will prevent expensive repairs, improve indoor air quality, increase HVAC lifespan, and keep your system running smoothly.

3. Get an Energy Audit

SDG&E and other California utility companies offer great rebates for energy audits and preventative maintenance. Getting a full diagnostic report of your HVAC will help you decide if now is the right time to upgrade your system, or what repairs are necessary to prevent costly utility bills and keep your home comfortable.

4. Purchase a Humidifier

The summer heat in the southwest is notoriously dry, and the best way to keep a secure amount of moisture in your home is to get a humidifier. Putting moisture back into your home’s air has proven to decrease risk of infections, improve sinuses, help your body heal faster, improve sleep and even keep your houseplants healthier!

How Going Solar Gives You Independence from Utility Companies

Evolving solar solutions and technology is shaping the future for more utility customers to become independent of the utility grid.

Advances in technology now allow residents to install solar panels on their home, property, or commercial business and create enough electricity through photovoltaic cells to provide enough power for all your electrical needs. California has become the first state to provide 5% of its electricity by solar power, and as more customers take advantage of the year-round sun to power their homes, many advantages arise beyond saving thousands of dollars on electric bills.

It is common to see solar panels affixed to roofs and canyon hillsides all across California, and for many curious onlookers, the first questions that comes to mind is ‘How do solar panels work?’ and ‘How can they allow homeowners to become independent of the utility grid?’

Solar panels are made up of several small units called photovoltaic (PV) cells which contain two layers of semi-conductor materials. As sunlight hits the solar panels the light causes the electrons to move and jump from the first layer to the second layer. This flow of electrons is direct current (DC) electricity. The more sun that hits the panel, the more electricity is produced by the PV system.

The DC electricity flows from the panels into an inverter (read more about micro-inverters vs. string inverters here) which converts the DC current into AC current, which is what all electrical appliances use when plugged into a wall outlet. A two-way meter tracks the power produced by the solar panel system and any electricity that your home doesn’t immediately need is either stored in batteries for later use in your home, or it is sent to the utility grid and your account is credited the amount for later use.

In sunny locations such as much of California, solar panels can be a great way for homeowners to save money on their utility bills, become independent from the utility grid, and help the environment along the way.

Can I Take My Solar Panels With Me When I Move? | Solar San Diego

Although not a question we get very often, we occasionally have people ask what happens to their solar panels if they decide to move. Some people wonder whether they can take their solar panels with them when they move. Technically, the answer to this question is yes, but the better question is  actually “should I take my panels with me if I move?”

Solar panels require a considerable investment to install. Much of the cost for solar electric systems comes in the form of labor to install the panels. Paying for labor to remove the panels and then again to have them re-installed at your new home can significantly reduce or even nullify the gains investing in solar would yield.

Solar Panels Improve Home Value

Installing solar on your home can have a considerable impact on your home’s value. Studies have shown that homes with solar not only sell for more, they sell faster. Removing the panels from your home would actually be counter-intuitive because you can realize a higher resale value, which you can then use to re-install new panels on your home.

Although there haven’t been significant leaps in solar technology, newer panels are likely to be more efficient than your older panels and installation costs have dropped considerably in the last few years (by more than 60 percent in some areas in fact), so you will likely come out ahead financially by simply leaving the panels on your current home and buying new.

What to Do If You Want to Take Your Solar Panels With You

If we haven’t convinced you otherwise and you still want to take your solar panels with you, be sure to hire a qualified electrician or builder who is certified to perform solar panel removal. The panels will need to be removed in a manner that will not damage them and properly packed for transit. If your panels are damaged during transit after they have been removed from your home, they will not be covered by manufacturer warranty, leading to additional expense to have your system re-installed on your new home.

What If I Lease Panels?

Although we do not provide solar leasing programs,  some homeowners do choose to lease solar panels. Policies for what happens with your solar panels if you move while under a leasing agreement varies by provider. Please check with your provider to learn more about their specific policy.

Will Solar Increase My Property’s Value?

Trusted Solar Panel Installation in San Diego, CA Many homeowners often worry that solar panels will not increase their property value—or worse—will make it decline. Numerous studies on the impact of solar panels on property values have determined that this is not the case, however.

How Much Will Solar Panels Improve My Property Value?

A recent study by Wells Fargo Bank and the Journal of Appraisers stated that adding a residential solar electric system adds value at a rate of 20-to-1 of the savings in utility savings. This increases the value of a home by 3-4 percent.

Other studies have shown property values can actually increase even more! The impact on property values can vary considerably by the part of the country you live in. In our area, Southern California, homes with solar and energy efficiency upgrades are highly sought after and command a premium on the home market. In addition to being worth more than comparable homes without solar electric systems, they sell faster!

In fact, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory found that homes with solar power sold faster than to the equivalent of homes without.

Can I Calculate How Much Solar Panels Will Increase my Property Value?

Absolutely. There are a number of great, free, tools available online that allow you to quickly and easily calculate potential property value increases from installing a solar photovoltaic system on your home.

We like http://pvvalue.com. This website is run by Sandia National Laboratories, a multi-program laboratory managed and operated by Sandia Corporation, a wholly owned subsidiary of Lockheed Martin Corporation, for the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration.

Simply register to download their PV Value tool in excel form and fill in the necessary information to determine the impact a solar electric system may have on your property values.
