The San Diego Gulls are a winning team on and off the ice. The Gulls Foundation facilitates and supports programs that produce positive change for children and families throughout Southern California by providing educational opportunities, broadening access to the sport of hockey, and addressing the health and wellness needs within the San Diego community. The Gulls are also apart of the extensive military community within San Diego; giving military and their families vouchers to enjoy Gulls Hockey as apart of the Military Ticket Program and honors active duty military and veterans at the annual Salute to Heroes event. The team is the fifth hockey team in San Diego to use the Gulls name.
The Gulls led the entire AHL in attendance for the 2015-2016 season, its first in the American Hockey League.
The Norfolk Admirals franchise was purchased by the Anaheim Ducks to become the San Diego Gulls as part of a new Pacific Division
We are very excited to have the Gulls back, representing San Diego in the AHL within a very competitive division. With a strong team and large community backing, we are looking forward to a winning season!
Although this is only the Gulls second season representing San Diego, it is not the first time the Gulls have made Valley View Casino their home. The Gulls are the sixth professional hockey team to play there, following the original San Diego Gulls of the WHL (1966–74), the San Diego Mariners of the WHA (1974–77), the San Diego Hawks/Mariners of the Pacific Hockey League (1977–79), the second San Diego Gulls of the IHL (1990–1995), and the third San Diego Gulls of the West Coast Hockey League and later the ECHL (1995–2006).
This 2016-2017 season is the Gulls second season in the AHL. The Gulls were formerly known as the Norfolk Admirals, an American Hockey League (AHL) franchise. As a new team, the Gulls are affiliated with the NHL’s (National Hockey League’s) Anaheim Ducks and were apart of the major relocation of seven franchises with the AHL, including five teams moving to California. As a result of the relocations, a major realignment of AHL’s conferences and divisions were announced in May 2015. It is an exciting time for hockey fans in California with the newly established teams, conferences and divisions – and we are very proud to support the Gulls as one of the seven teams to form the new AHL Pacific Division!
