To the naked eye, solar panels appear susceptible to damage from low-impact collisions, but looks can be deceiving.

The solar cells themselves are very fragile. In fact, they are only a few millimeters thick.  However, the glass and frame that surrounds them is very sturdy and durable.

Solar panels are designed to endure even the most severe weather conditions. From 90+ mile per hour wind to medium sized tree limbs to golf ball sized (or larger) hail, solar panels have been specifically tested and designed to withstand any impacts.

Guidelines and More

A good general guideline for determining how durable a solar panel is against impact is if it will break your roof, it will break your solar panels.  If something large enough to break your roof has impacted your home, there is a good chance you have bigger things to be concerned about!

The most vulnerable part of your solar panel is actually the underbelly of the panel. This area is not designed to withstand impact, so most often when a solar panel breaks, it is due to negligence during installation. This makes it very important to ensure you choose a solar installer that treats your panels with care during installation. This becomes important if they ever need to be removed temporarily for other home improvement projects.

Solar panels are very durable. We still recommend that you contact your insurance adjuster to ensure that your solar panels are covered by your home insurance policy. Many problems—in the unlikely event they arise—will be covered by the manufacturer’s warranty. Solar panels represent a major investment in your home and it is a good idea to make sure that investment is protected as much as possible. Can Solar Be Installed on a Tile Roof?

Efficient Solar Panels on Tile Roofs Have a tile roof and want to install solar panels, but not sure if you can? Solar panels on tile roofs are one of our specialties.

The good news is you can! Installing solar on a tile roof requires a different approach, but it is possible. On a traditional asphalt roof, solar installation would simply require drilling into the roof and attaching your mounting brackets to the roof studs. The area around the mounting brackets is then sealed and a flashing is installed to prevent water infiltration from the roof penetrations.

When installing solar panels on a tiled roof, the tiles must be removed. Attempting to drill through the tiles may result in the tile cracking and needing to be replaced—increasing your installation costs. If you have specialty or antique tile, it is a good idea to have a roofing specialist remove the tiles to prevent damage during removal.

Once the tiles are removed, the mounting brackets are put into place and flashing are installed just as they would be on a normal solar installation.

If you would prefer to leave the tiles in place, you can attempt to drill through them. If you prefer this method, remove the tile and put in a mounting bracket. Drill a hole in the tile you have removed and put a threaded rod through the hole and into the mounting device.

Can Solar Be Installed on a Slate Roof?

Best Solar Panels on a Slate Roof Want solar panels on a slate roof, but not sure if that is possible?

Although this comes up less in the Southern California area than installing solar on a tile roof, we are still often asked whether solar panels can be installed on a slate roof.

Slate roofs can present a little more difficulty than a standard asphalt roof, but with the help of an experienced solar installer, you’ll have your home creating clean and reliable electricity quicker than you think! Our company is highly skilled in installations on any kind of roof.

How Is Solar Installed on a Slate Roof?

The installation process on a slate roof is roughly the same as it is on an asphalt roof. The major difference, however, is that instead of drilling your mounting brackets into the slate roofing, the roofing tiles must be removed. A standoff is then attached through the sheathing to the rafter below and a mounting bracket is attached to the standoff.

Once the standoff is in place, then you simply flash around the standoff in the same way you would around a roof vent or a solar array installed on an asphalt roof. The overall process is very similar to any other solar installation. It is important to keep in mind that you are dealing with roofing components that are much more fragile and expensive than a traditional asphalt roof. We recommend using a solar installation company with slate roofing experience or even having a professional slate roofer present during the installation process to ensure your slate roof is properly removed and replaced around your new solar array.

Do Nots for Solar on a Slate Roof

The only major do not for slate roofing is do not drill through the slate roofing. This can have several negative consequences. Drilling through your slate roofing tiles can make them crack—causing them to leak or void your warranty.

Biomass has been a main source of energy since the beginning – using wood to create fire to cook food and keep warn. Biomass energy is used for power production, and to create products that would otherwise be made from fossil fuels. Although creating biomass energy produces carbon dioxide and can technically contribute to greenhouse gas emissions, it is balanced by the carbon dioxide captured in its own growth. Biomass sources include wood (largest biomass resource still used today), wood based plants, manure, crops, algae, organic components of municipal and industrial wastes residues, and debris from forestry.

Geothermal Heat

Geothermal heat comes from heat below the earth’s surface – ranging from magma miles below the earth’s surface, heat rock, or as pockets of steam or hot water (hot springs).  In the US, the majority of geothermal reservoirs are located in the western states, Alaska, and Hawaii. Energy produced by geothermal heat is either produced by power plants or from geothermal heat wells that are drilled into underground heat reservoirs for the generation of electricity or direct-use applications. The geothermal power plants uses the heat to create steam or boiling water in order to turn turbines that generate electricity. Direct-use applications include heating homes or buildings, drying crops, growing plants in greenhouses, and other industrial processes such as pasteurizing milk or heating water at fish farms.
